Legal services outsourcing first became a viable option within the legal scene in 2009, although when it first emerged, it was not widely accepted. It was not until 2010 that this approach became acceptable. Now, outsourcing such work as document and contract review, transaction support and legal research is widely done.

However, during 2010, the practice was up for debate among many legal professionals, discussing how outsourcing could reduce their legal spend while increasing their companies' efficiency by getting their lawyers away from "busy" work and back to practicing law, according to the website Sourcing Focus.

"With mounting pressure from their corporate clients to change the legal orthodoxy, many law firms who were previously sceptical about legal outsourcing were forced to look at how they would build outsourcing into their service delivery models," wrote Leah Cooper, director of legal services outsourcing at CPA Global, for the source.

"As a result, the concept of a three-way working relationship between corporate clients, law firms and legal services outsourcing providers has flourished and become a true symbol of change in the industry," she added.
