In years gone by, an employee would start at a company and would very well never leave. He or she would work their way up the corporate ladder and, several decades later, would retire.
Those days are long gone. According to the Bureau Labor of Statistics, the average person who was born in the latter years of the baby boom held 11 jobs between the ages of 18 and 47, with the majority of the positions being held before the age of 27.
Quality employees are not easy to come by and those that are worth their while could easily be picked up by the competition. They are also just as likely to be an entrepreneur and leave a company to be their own boss and incorporate a business, with 2,356 people moving to do so every day, Bright Hub notes.
To stem this loss, companies must be sure to hire properly.
"One of the largest costs of any business today is the recruitment, training and integration of talented employees," Inc. magazine reported. "But across the board, the businesses that perform the best also hire and retain the best. Quality people build quality businesses," it added.
