When incorporating a new business, one of the most daunting tasks presented to an entrepreneur can be finding customers to keep a company afloat. Many business owners don't understand how to find sales prospects and their efforts are misguided. Instead of simply spreading the word to anyone and everyone, a company must have a strategy.

The first step to finding customers is to decide who the ideal client for your company is. What demographic do they fall into - how old are they, what is their living situation and what type of lifestyle do they lead? Once an entrepreneur answers basic questions such as these, it is far easier to gain new consumers.

"If you can't list at least five characteristics of the people who you need to reach, your business isn't going very far very fast," Tom Hopkins wrote for Entrepreneur magazine. "To get your answer quickly, consider your top three existing clients. What do they have in common? The answer to that question will get you started."
