Starting a Business

Many experts are pointing to the Great Recession as the reason for an increase in the incorporation of small businesses nationwide. With the job market finally showing signs of recovery this year, an abundance of entrepreneurs have turned to startups as a means to survive.

According to a ranking completed by On Numbers, Austin, Texas, is one city that has fostered an entrepreneurial spirit and an environment that supports small businesses, The Business Journals reported. Following closely behind Austin were Oklahoma City, Charleston, Charlotte and Seattle.

Between 2004 and 2009, Austin added 286,000 residents, which the source notes in relation to the growth in small businesses. It expanded its job base by 9.3 percent between 2005 and 2010 and rose above other regions with a 1.5 percent growth of small businesses. The source reported that no other market was able to reach a figure higher than 0.6 percent.

Another region that has seen the benefit of entrepreneurs and small businesses is New Orleans. Between 2007 and 2009, 450 of every 100,000 adults were incorporating a startup company, a figure that is higher than the national average of 320 and double what it was six years ago, Inc. magazine reported.
