Starting a Business

A few decades ago, when a family had children, the mother would often choose to stay home and the father would commute to work and commit to a typical 9-to-5 day - or later, depending on the industry. Recently, however, mothers have cited feelings of unfulfillment and a loss of connection with the rest of the world.

To counteract this lack of satisfaction, many began incorporating their own businesses from home - thus the term "mompreneur" came into play.

“If you have a family, [working 60 hours per week is] crap," Elizabeth Kaiden, a mompreneuer who started Two Rooms, a workspace that offers childcare for self-employed New Yorkers, told the Globe and Mail.

"I was anxious about losing my sense of self, my ability to think, my earning capacity … I wanted to be home with my kids, but not exclusively. I wanted something that kept me in the world, that made me feel like a grown-up," she added.

For many mompreneuers, incorporating their own business is the extension of a life-long dream. Other did it out of necessity - they were unable to raise a family while working upwards of 50 hours per week, yet needed the additional income to support their household.
