As small businesses pick up the pace of hiring, many owners say they no longer need to enlist in the services of job boards and other hiring agencies because many are receiving a steady flow of unsolicited resumes and applications.
Often, having a referral program set in place is one way that companies obtain these resumes. For example, The Wall Street Journal recently reported about Watchfire Signs by Time-o-Matic, a company that offers its current employees $500 every time someone that they recommend gets hired and an additional $500 if that employee stays on for six months.
"People take great pride in the folks they refer," Steve Harriot, president and CEO of Watchfire, told the source. "We have low turnover for this reason."
Another way that small firms can hire is through the use of social media. While some companies may choose to network via LinkedIn, Inc. magazine recently wrote about using Twitter to recruit by having candidates create 140-character cover letters and resumes on why they are suited for a position. According to Inc., this creates transparency and gives companies more insight on their perspective employees.
