Despite indications from a number of sources that the economy is on the rise and small businesses are once again looking at recovered operations, the number of self-employed entrepreneurs has dramatically decreased since the start of the Great Recession, according to recent data.

Information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is indicating that there were 589,000 less incorporated self-employed individuals and 569,000 less unincorporated self-employed people in December 2007 than in February 2011, revealing a drop by of more than 1.1 million. Additionally, there are also 753,000 less self-employed people now than when the recovery first began in June 2009, Small Business Trends reported.

The source added that the recession and its slow recovery have done away with 10.1 percent of those self-employed people with incorporations.

"To give you a sense of the magnitude of this loss, between December 2007 and February 2011, the total number of Americans with jobs declined by 5.6 percent on a non-seasonally adjusted basis," Scott Shane reported for the source.

Included in these types of businesses are doctors' offices, law firms, accounting firms, dentists' offices, real estate agencies, insurance agencies and those involved in construction, Shane wrote. He said the biggest question to take away from this information is how long will it take to recover and rebuild America's small business owners?

Although the time period may be unclear, an entrepreneurial spirit will help recover these incorporations - especially given the fact that the unemployment rate is beginning to improve - hitting 9.8 percent in April.
