There are a variety of programs and options that help support a startup business or one in the process of incorporation. In an effort to spur small business hiring and filings and help keep companies afloat, the Kauffman Foundation launched its FastTrac New Venture program. The initiative was created 17 years ago, but due to the economic downturn, an increasing number of companies have recently turned to the program for help.
FastTrac supports entrepreneurs and small businesses with tailored programs that include the "FirstStep" program, designed to help entrepreneurs considering launching a business; "NewVenture" program for businesses that are already launched; "TechVenture" which offers support for technical businesses and "GrowthVenture," which assists businesses already in existence. Programs are 30 hours long and cost $1,200, although local organizations will often cover the fees for businesses.
In New York City, a group of 1,000 entrepreneurs recently participated in the program. Upon completion, 33 percent of participants launched their own business - 90 percent of which are still operating, according to Entrepreneur magazine.
