A recent report indicates that small business owners ended 2010 less optimistic than when the year began - but only by a slight amount.
The National Federation of Independent Business' recent optimism report indicated a slight drop in confidence among small businesses and entrepreneurs. December ended at 92.6 percent, a figure that showed a slight decrease - 0.6 points - from the previous month. However, the index was up from December 2009's 88 points.
"Sometimes it's difficult to really understand what these indexes signify," Sharon Bernstein wrote in the Los Angeles Times.
"This one is configured so that the 100 equals the level of confidence that businesses felt in 1986. To me, at least, it can sometimes make more sense to drill down and see the actual statistics that show what businesses experienced during the year," she added.
To see a more accurate, easy-to-read figures, Bernstein recommends examining the figures that businesses earned. About 34 percent of businesses earned less in December 2010 compared to November, hence the drop in confidence, but this percentage was still up from the year before, according to the NFIB survey.
